12 years later I remember 9-11-2001. The vivid proof that the ideals of democracy and personal freedoms are violently opposed by some in the world. The conflict between the ideals of radical Islam and Western democratic ideals is more obvious and widespread today.
My country is far from perfect. There are many things I would change. Yet I firmly believe that “democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.” We know that human beings are imperfect, but we should strive to do our best.
I love and respect my wife, daughter, and granddaughter as much as my sons and grandson. I consider them to be equal human beings. Different, but equal in the sight of God. Our differing understanding of God – Yaweh – Allah is the result of our limitations as humans to understand.
I remember that those who died included First-Responders (firefighters and others) attempting to rescue people in the towers. And the (mostly immigrant and mostly menial) workers in the Windows on the World Restaurant.
We are all Children of God and capable of better than this. We should love all human beings as we love ourselves.
