Happy Birthday Aunt Henrietta
Aunt Henrietta is celebrating her 89th birthday, and 4 1/2 years without a fracture! This is a major victory for her. She is one of our many stars!
Despite starting on enough calcium and enough vitamin D over 6 years ago, Henrietta broke one wrist, then the other wrist, and finally a shoulder. Finally she added osteoporosis medications. Despite falling all the way down the attic stairs, she has not broken anything since.
She has severe “humpback” kyphosis. Then she added those 3 Fragility Fractures. She had moved beyond the point where preserving is good enough. She needed the Anabolic, Forteo, and then, the Antiresorptive that gets along with her severe GERD and tiring kidneys, Prolia.
Aunt Henrietta is a testament to the possibility of salvaging bones over 80 years old after multiple fractures from severe osteoporosis. Because she is no longer breaking, she can live alone in her own home.
You don’t have to wait as long as Henrietta did before acting. Fracture prevention is a lot easier on a person than fracture treatment. Get a complete bone health evaluation while you still have decent bones, and learn how to best preserve them. You can often do this without meds, if you start early enough!
Happy Birthday Henrietta. May your remaining years be long and Fracture Free!
