Butterfly Blue Zones

I took a few minutes out of my Friday mid-day to visit Kingsley Elementary.  Butterfly Release Day!  As I arrived mid festival, a butterfly fluttered by.

Each first grade class had raised Painted Lady caterpillars in a mesh butterfly house for the last 3 weeks.  The Butterfly Lady had taught them the life cycle of these amazing creatures – from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly.  And now the butterflies were going out into the wide world.  The first graders and kindergardeners were agog at the wonder of nature.

I observed a teaching moment.  These young minds were absorbing the wonders of life.  They had seen and now understand the concept of physical metamorphosis.  They are better prepared to undergo their own metamorphosis from small child to responsible adult.

Blue Zones teach us to appreciate the wonders of nature, to live in harmony with our world.  Humans must extract our living from the world around us.  All living things must.  Natural resources are consumed in that process.  We do this best with understanding of and respect for the world around us.

The Butterfly Lady (my wife) lives in the Blue Zone of a volunteer teaching first graders the wonders of reading for most of the year.  Each spring she teaches the wonder of the world around us.

Look around you.  See the wonder of life.  Enter your own Blue Zone.  Then share it with others.
