You Can Prevent Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a growing problem which will affect over half of all women and a quarter of all men during their lifetimes.   The good news is that we are learning better ways to prevent and treat osteoporosis.

I became interested in preventing osteoporosis because weak bones break easily. As an orthopedic surgeon I had to try to put them back together. Some bones I operated on were not as strong as a stale English muffin.

I decided to help people prevent Osteoporosis.  That’s why I started the Cedar Valley Bone Health Institute of Iowa four years ago.  That is why I am starting this blog now.

Treating osteoporosis is no fun. Playing catch-up is tough. Preventing osteoporosis prevents bones from breaking so easily. Your bone health and bone strength can best be built up over a life-time, but it is never too late to start.

There are simple steps that you can take to improve your bone health. Some of these steps were not known just a few years ago.

This is the first in a series of blogs about bone health. Twice a week I will share what I have learned from the National Osteoporosis Foundation, the American Society of Bone Mineral Research, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and other meetings I attend.
