Breast Cancer is bad enough without further worries.  Unfortunately, the newest and best anti-cancer treatments can result in a rapid advance of Osteoporosis and Fragility Fractures.  Fortunately, acting to prevent and treat osteoporosis can slow or prevent the spread of the cancer!

We talked about these issues when I spoke to a Breast Cancer Support Group on Monday.  These are women fighting a deadly foe with strength and determination, as my mother did years ago.

New evidence shows that you need a vitamin D level much higher than “100%” of federal standards for osteoporosis medications to be fully effective.  That is why I always aim for 40 to 80 ng/ml 25-hydroxy Vitamin D in my patients.

Reclast is the version of Zolendronate used for Osteoporosis treatment.  I do not do cancer treatment, so I will not discuss Zometa here other than to say that it is used successfully to slow or stop the spread of metastatic cancer which has spread to bone.  All warnings about Reclast apply to Zometa.

Reclast is given once a year by a 20-30 minute long infusion.  You need to be lying down for the infusion.  You need to be monitored for a full hour.  This needs to be done at an infusion center.
