The purpose of good bone health is to prevent fractures.  Most fractures happen as a result of a fall.  If you do not fall, you decrease your fracture risk.  How do you prevent falls?

Regular exercise will strengthen your muscles.  Strong muscles are part of the solution.  But you also need good balance.  Good balance requires exercises to strengthen the muscles required for balance.

Balance exercises have been used for centuries to keep people limber and free from falling, and thereby, free from fractures.  They are often taught in group sessions, but can be performed alone on any flat surface.

Tai Chi and Yoga are the best known ancient balance exercises.  Daily, or at least 3 times weekly, sessions of 20-30 minutes will gradually improve your balance and prevent falls.

Less interesting, but easier to do anywhere, is simply walking on your toes for several minutes.  More challenging is walking on your heels, like a penguin.  If you can do that for 2 minutes straight, you have great muscles, strong ankles, and are unlikely to stumble, even on uneven ground.

Take Control Naturally by working on your Balance.  Remember that proper nutrition is necessary for strong muscles and bones.

Happy Mother’s Day

What can you do for your mother?  Mother’s Day is when you thank your mother for all that she did for you.  Seriously?  That is too much to accomplish in just one day with flowers and a meal.  Perhaps you can do something that could improve the rest of her life!

Your mother is getting older every year.  We all do that.  Perhaps she is shrinking or developing a humped back (kyphosis).  We can prevent that!  Perhaps she has fallen and broken a bone.  We can often prevent that too!

Over the last 20 years the world has changed.  We now know how to prevent bones from deteriorating.  We can improve bone health and prevent fractures.  The sooner we start, the better we can preserve your mother’s independent lifestyle.  Your independence too, if you are her caregiver.

Without attention to their bone health, half of all women over age 50 suffer at least one fracture.  We can prevent nearly 2/3 of those fractures.  A Complete Bone Health Evaluation tells us in what areas you have opportunities for improvement.

We start with enough Calcium in foods and supplements, enough Vitamin D3 supplements, enough Protein, Multiple Vitamins & Minerals and balance exercises.  Sometimes medications.

Your mother sacrificed her bone health for you before and after your birth.  She gave you a lot.  Give back to her.  And if you must give chocolates, try Adora Chocolates with a whole meal’s Calcium in each.

Check out your mother’s bone health.  Yours too.  Then take Control of both your futures.

Not Just DXA – Fracture Risk !!

DXA is very good at determining Bone Mineral Density (BMD), provided you look at the images and over-read the computer.  DXA alone is less good at predicting Fracture Risk.  But, Fractures are what we want to avoid.

At the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) meeting this week, we will discuss the other modalities, which supplement DXA to obtain greater accuracy.  Vertebral Fracture Assessment (VFA) helps evaluate bone quality.  FRAX was specifically designed to predict Fracture Risk.  QCT (Quantitative Computerized Tomography) has been added in recent years as an alternative to DXA.

ISCD will discuss adding  TBS (Trabecular Bone Score), Hip Structural Analysis, Hip Axis Length, and uses of Central CT.  We are constantly pushing toward our goal – Prevent Fractures.

Preventing Fractures is not just DXA.  Get a Complete Bone Health Evaluation.

Take Control of your future.  Check your bone health.

Androgen Deprivation Therapy – ADT

Androgen Deprivation Therapy is used to treat Prostate Cancer.  ADT is usually effective against Prostate Cancer, adding years to a man’s life.  However, ADT can cause Osteoporosis and Fractures, UNLESS we treat to Prevent Fractures.

The good news is that we can decrease Fracture Risk by more than half.  Plus, the medication which preserves bone can help treat the cancer!  We can usually delay, and sometimes prevent, metastases to bone.  Occasionally we can shrink the original prostate cancer tumor.  Amazing!  You can Take Control.
