I recently noticed that a friend seems to be Shrinking! She is not as tall as she used to be. When I mentioned it, she said that her kids had been on her about her Poor Posture! She has tried exercises and PT, but her “posture” is getting worse.
When I looked at her with my “doctor eyes”, I realized that she has Kyphosis or Vertebral Compression Fractures. It is also called the “Dowager Hump” or “Humpback”.
Her mother’s back became so badly humped that she could not see in front of herself when standing! Now my friend is developing the same problem! It is time to get serious about evaluation and treatment of her Osteoporosis!
My Aunt Henrietta helped spark my interest in Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment. She has experienced several complications of severe osteoporosis. She always looked after her neices and nephews. I have had the opportunity to return the favor. And I have been able to visit her this past week.
Visiting Henrietta reminds me of the problems that accompany severe osteoporosis. She can no longer see what is on a shelf much more than 4 feet from the floor. Reaching the upper half of closets is a huge challenge. Opening the upper pane of her windows required my assistance.
I have been a Certified Clinical Densitometrist for 4 years. Before that I read spine and hip x-rays for 30+ years as an orthopedic surgeon. Now I know that I was missing 15-20% of the patients with osteoporosis when I read DXA alone.
