Armistice Day

11th hour, 11th day, 11th month of 1918.  Suddenly the shelling stopped.  Silence.  Peace after more than 4 years of the “War to End All Wars”.

Now we call it Veterans’ Day in honor of those who served in all wars.  They put their lives at risk for the sake of their nation.  Many came home with wounds that never fully healed, including the nightmares.  Some failed to come home at all, except in a box.

I served in the medical corps.  I salute those who served on the line.  And I thank them for their sacrifice.  To all members of the military past and present:  Thank you for serving!

Sunday, 10 November at 3PM at G-B Performing Arts Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  “To Be Certain of the Dawn” by Stephan Paulus is an acknowledgement of Krystalnacht, the beginning of the Holocaust.  First Jews, but then Gays, Gypsies, Trade Unionists……and eventually Practicing Christians were marginalized, then eliminated.

On the 75th anniversary of Krystalnacht, WCF Symphony, Met Chorale, Children’s Choirs, and others will perform this cathartic composition, which passes through darkness, despair, and horror to the most difficult Commandment of all:  “You Should Love Your Neighbor As Yourself”.
