Vitamin D in Milk

A little vitamin D is added to milk.  Drinking 3 glasses of milk daily nearly meets the old standard of 400 IU daily, but 16 glasses of milk – a whole gallon daily would be needed to meet the new standard of 2000 IU daily.

Vertebral Compression Fractures represent an area of changing understanding of Osteoporosis.  As an orthopaedic surgeon, I understand that a fracture is a fracture whether it occurs all at once or gradually over time.  This understanding is spreading in the Osteoporosis community.

Forteo (Teriparatide) is the only Anabolic osteoporosis medication in the USA.  It acts by directly stimulating the Osteoblast cells that make new bone matrix.  It is the only type of osteoporosis medication which actually grows substantial new bone.  See my post about “Osteoclasts Gone Wild”.

Anabolic medications directly stimulate the OsteoBlast cells that build new bone matrix.  Anabolics work by increasing new bone formation faster than the OsteoClast cells can eat away the old bone.  See my post about “Osteoclasts Gone Wild”.
